Bloomfield School: From Rubble to Inferno – What’s Next for This Historic Building?

A Changing History
Bloomfield School closed its doors in 1988. For years, it served as a community center, offering space for local programs. In the early 2010s, the City and Province saw potential in the site for redevelopment. They proposed turning it into a space with both residential and community areas. However, those plans fell apart, and the site has sat vacant ever since.
By 2014, the building had deteriorated significantly. Although the vision for its future remained, the site needed major work.
A New Vision Emerges
In 2022, the BANC Group purchased the property for $22 million. Their plan included 40% affordable housing and mixed-use residential development. It was an exciting vision that could have made a big impact on the neighborhood.
Sadly, the building’s condition worsened. Inspectors flagged safety concerns over time. On February 16th, 2025, a fire broke out, sparking new questions about the future of the site.
The City’s Next Steps
Following the fire, District 8 Councillor Virginia Hinch stepped in. She’s considering ways to bring the issue to Council. One possibility is for the city to buy back the property from the BANC Group. This could give the city more control over the redevelopment process.
A Collaborative Solution for Bloomfield School
Rather than simply focusing on the city buying back the site, I believe there’s a better way forward. The Province and HRM could partner with a private developer who shares the original vision for the site. A mixed-use project with affordable housing and space for local businesses would benefit the community.
The North End needs more affordable housing. But it also needs spaces where local businesses can thrive. A project that combines residential and commercial spaces could bring vitality to the neighborhood. The site could become a place for people to live, work, and engage with their community.
Looking Ahead: Building a Stronger North End
Bloomfield School could play a key role in the North End’s growth. It has the potential to become a central part of the community. But that will require a thoughtful, collaborative effort. Developers, the city, and the community need to come together to create a plan that works for everyone.
